Wine and gastro tours
The island of Korčula will enchant you with its natural beauties, its wines and gastronomy specialities. Through our offer, we have tried to combine everything that Korcula offers into one intense experience that will remain in your memory.
Korčula has been famous for one thousand year old tradition of wine making. Much of the evidence found confirms that wine has been produced on this island since the 4th century BC. By contrast to the rest of Dalmatia, which is known mostly for its red wines, the island of Korčula is renowned above all for the quality of its white wines, made from its native grapevine varieties.
In the central part of the island people grow Pošip and Rukatac, in Lumbarda , on the eastern tip of the island , there are the vineyards of Grk. Among the reds the most popular is Plavac Mali. The wines of Korčula are celebrated for their exquisite character, for their complexity, for accentuated varietal aromas and for their high alcohol content – they reflect Mediterranean sunshine, scent and tastes.
On the island of Korčula delicious and diverse cuisine is developed, which, while keeping genuine and domestic, was also influenced by the incomers. On the island meat dishes are mostly made of lamb and beef meat. One of the best known local dishes is „Korčulanska pašticada“ what is Korčula style beef stew, that requires long preparation and is best served with handmade gnocchi.
Korčula is also known for its „Žrnovski makaruni“ – homemade pasta served with meat sauce. Domestic fruits and vegetables are grown, and you can taste fresh fish every day.
Apart from cuisine , olive oil is used also in cosmetics and as medicine. With wine making, olive oil production on this island has a very long tradition and presents extremely important economic activity. For many families production of olive oil means existence, so the effort and care involved in the production quarantee high quality of the final product.
Aromatic plants (rosemary, laurel, lavender, basil, sage, mint, thyme, marjoram…) are used in dishes, drinks, and as a cure. At the same time the diversity and distribution of noble plants on the island is suitable for beekeeping and honey production.
