In the immediate vicinity of the old town of Korcula there are about 20 islets of the Korcula archipelago, locally known as “Škoji”. The unique combination of islets shape, sea color, vegetation and animals turns this archipelago into a unique oasis of beauty, ideal for classic summer enjoyment. Two islets are inhabited (Badija and Vrnik), and on one there is a beach club (Stupe).
Badija is the largest of the islets, with area of almost 1 km2. On the islet there is a monastery from the 14th century with one of the most beautiful cloisters on the Adriatic. Yugoslav President Tito donated the islet with a herd of deer, which you can still see walking freely around.
The second largest, but probably much more important in history for the old town of Korčula is the islet of Vrnik. Through out history there was a quarry there, of high quality stone. It was characteristic for its white color. Buildings all over the world, from Hagia Sophia in Instambul to the White House in Washington, were built for it, but also most of the buildings in the old town of Korcula and some in Dubrovnik. Today you can enjoy beautiful white pebbled beaches of the island, the architecture of summer houses of noble families and local cuisine at a famous restaurant.
